Education

Pastor Johnson was educated in the Orleans Parish School System. He attended McDonogh#24 Elementary School (K-8) grades and Walter L Cohn High School; graduated in 1954. Pastor received an athletic scholarship to Dillard University to pursue an Elementary Education Degree. After one (1) year he entered the United States Air Force and served three (3) years. He was given an early discharge to complete his college career. Pastor Johnson re-enrolled at Dillard University where he received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Elementary Education in 1961. He continued with further studies at UNO, Xavier and Loyola Universities. Pastor Johnson taught Elementary Education from 1961-1985. He began teaching and coaching Junior High from 1985-1988 when he retired upon receiving his call to Pastor. He later returned to teaching from 1991-1995.

 

Related Job Experiences

Rev. Johnson better known as Coach worked as a New Orleans Recreation Supervisor for thirty (30) plus years at Willie Hall, Hardin and Joe Brown Playgrounds. He coached all sports and won many championships and awards. (2)

 

Christian Experiences

Pastor Johnson was baptized at Mt. Moriah B.C. by Rev. Reuben A. Hack on August 19, 1954. He was a faithful member of the Usher Board, Deacon/Trustee Board and taught the Adult Sunday School Class for many years. Pastor Johnson was very active and supportive with the churches in the community.

 

Pastor acknowledged his calling to the ministry in June of 1975, Preached his first sermon in September of 1975 entitled “The Gift of God”; Licensed in March, 1976 and ordained by the Ideal Association in 1977 by the late Rev. A.L. Davis.
Rev. Johnson served faithfully as an associate minister under the pastorage of the late Rev. Simmie Lee Harvey for twelve (12) years. He implemented a Tuesday Night Bible Study and Evangelistic Team.

 

Pastor Johnson received a Master of Theology in 1981 from Union Baptist Theological Seminary, Master of Divinity in 1983 from the New Orleans Baptist Seminary and Honorary Doctorate of Divinity in 1998 from Christian Bible College.

 

Pastoral Accomplishments

  • Called to Pastor Mt. Carmel #2 Baptist Church

  • Founder/Chartered Pastor of Greater Mt. Carmel Baptist Church

  • Purchased the land at present site (Texaco Station)

  • Built present edifice, Greater Mt. Carmel Baptist Church

  • Added classrooms to the existing edifice

  • Purchased the double behind the church on Pauline St. for parking

  • Implemented After School Tutorial Program for youth at church and other schools in the community

  • Implemented a Computer Program and an Adult Program for seniors

  • Secured a grant to build the GMC Tutorial and Community Development Center Incorporation

  • Added a wing to the existing edifice to seat additional congregants, and a new pastor’s study

  • Purchased two (2) vans for transportation of members and etc.

  • Purchased property next to church for parking on Claiborne Ave.

  • Completed third (3rd.) Expansion Project of Greater Mt. Carmel B.C.

Family

Rev. Ernest Johnson was born December 24, 1935 to the late Joseph and Rozelia White Johnson. He is the only child from that union. Pastor Johnson is the loving and devoted husband of thirty-eight (38) years to Estella C. Johnson. He is the father of four, Ernest Joseph, Kevin, Sean and Shondra Johnson. He is also the proud grandfather of (6) Chad, Christianna, Victoria, Garrett, Sean Jr and Zander. 0ne (1) great grandson, Chad Jr.
